As predicted, Italy is set to elect a right-wing populist government led by Giorgia Meloni and supported by Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi. If this coalition lasts no longer than the average Italian government, will its downfall be caused by internal disputes (such as on Ukrainian assistance) or intervention from Brussels. Today nearly a quarter of EU citizens live under national conservative governments: is that the ‘critical mass’ needed for this populism to endure?
